Tamil Nadu is emerging as India's innovation powerhouse, with a thriving R&D ecosystem bridging world-class academia and industry. The State is ranked among the top three in India for research and development output. Tamil Nadu hosts 9.5% of all R&D institutions in India, including premier Centre like IIT Madras, Anna University, and national labs, and over 350 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) of multinational companies driving product R&D. This concentration of innovation assets has created a rich environment for cutting-edge research – from automotive design to biotech – making Tamil Nadu a magnet for R&D investments.
Tamil Nadu’s innovation infrastructure includes India’s first university-based Research Park at IIT Madras, multiple IIT and NIT campuses, CSIR laboratories (for leather, metallurgy, etc.), and private R&D Centre of global firms (automotive, electronics, software). The State government’s R&D Policy 2022 aims to boost R&D spending and encourage industry-academia collaboration. Notably, global firms are choosing Tamil Nadu for an advanced engineering and design Centre – evidenced by the rapid growth of GCCs creating high-value jobs. Chennai, often dubbed the “Detroit of Asia,” not only produces vehicles but also houses a design and innovation Centre for automakers and electronics giants.
