Tamil Nadu is positioned as India’s most visited and most diverse tourism state, combining ancient culture, modern connectivity, and investment-ready destinations across leisure, heritage, wellness, business, and experiential travel segments.
In 2023, Tamil Nadu hosted about 286 million domestic tourists and 1.17 million foreign tourists, with foreign arrivals nearly tripling over 2022 and contributing to tourism revenue growing roughly fivefold between 2020–21 and 2023–24.
Tamil Nadu consistently ranks among the top Indian states in both domestic and foreign tourist visits, and now attracts tourists from 70+ countries across leisure, pilgrimage, and medical travel.
300+ destinations have conceptual master plans covering culture, hills, coasts, and nature trails, enabling plug-and-play opportunities in resorts, adventure parks, wellness centres, and digital visitor infrastructure.

70+ major destinations span hill stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal and Yercaud, blue-flag and scenic beaches near Chennai, Mahabalipuram and Kanyakumari, and leading wildlife areas such as Mudumalai, Anamalai (Topslip) and Kalakkad–Mundanthurai.
Tamil Nadu attracts about 25% of India's medical tourists, with over 1.5 million patients a year coming from more than 70 countries and supported by 12,500+ hospital beds, 10 lakh registered doctors, and 48 government medical colleges, along with hundreds of private multi-specialty hospitals.
Travellers are tapping treks and eco-trails in the Western Ghats, heritage walks in temple and port cities, farm and river tourism in the delta, food and textile trails, music and dance seasons in Chennai, and adventure and water sports in projects like Hogenakkal, Yelagiri, and coastal hubs.
